There is something deliciously monstrous about a grown woman who has tied a bow anywhere on her body. Someone I know called it an affront to feminism. I’m not sure that my hairdo is pushing the movement backwards, but I get what she’s saying. The writer Carmen Maria Machado addressed this to creepy perfection in her short story “The Husband Stitch.” The narrator has a ribbon tied in a bow that’s part of her body. A suitor notices it:

Even a simple wall clock from a dollar store can be customized with washi tape. Bright colours look great in a kids room or in a space that has a playful decor, where as black and white washi tape will look sleek and contemporary.

Furoshiki is a Japanese art of using fabric to wrap items. There are many different ways to fold the fabric under this practice, but the general notion of using fabric to wrap your Christmas gifts is one that’s becoming more popular. Use extra pieces of fabric around your home, or give your spare sheets, pillowcase and towels a secondary function this season. I’ve also seen gift bows fashioned out of neckties, which can make a beautiful statement.
