No one ever used the word “poor.” Only one house on our dirt road had a bathroom and it had been added to their back porch. Our little Methodist church had one room. Mama was the Sunday School superintendent for the 15 or 20 women and children who attended.

My cousins knew their way around a frozen surface, skating backwards, sideways and in circles, and even running on the snow-covered ice. One of them loaned me his ice skates.
